The course will then examine the contributions of the early Church, monasticism, ancient philosophy, liturgical poetry, mysticism, patristic theology, and the major themes of ascetic theology. As well, it will consider preaching, catechesis, hagiography, and extra-liturgical devotions (e.g. pilgrimage, etc). The course will emphasize readings of the great classic texts to the 14th century.
