This pass/fail first-term required course presents an overview of living the Christian faith in community, with an emphasis on spiritual formation for leadership. It places this overview within the context of the church's visible witness and an understanding of its mission as participation in Christ's mission. It hopes to help students think through the intersection of contemporary motions of spirituality and piety and the Christian life lived in the community of the church, with its disciplines and practice. It also hopes to begin to prepare students for continued growth and formation in Christ, through the gifts the church offers, as they begin to be trained and formed as Christian leaders.

Education and Faith Formation

The course will provide an overview to education ministry and to faith formation. It will examine the purpose, context, and content of CE and examine basic learning theory and curriculum resources. Students will also read a spiritual memoir and reflect on transformation in the Christian life. Practical skills for educational ministry will include evaluating curricula, contextual analysis of an educational site, and designing and facilitating a workshop. Intercultural challenges for CE will be discussed. Aspects of age-related ministry will include resources for children, youth and adults. In addition, education at different life stages will be studied as moments for formation of individuals and families as well as the community (baptism and confirmation). Students are encouraged to research a historical or contemporary practice of CE/formation and develop a paper on that topic. Students will read Tye, Pazmino, McClaren, Miles and Winner. Evaluation: Participation 10%; Site visit paper 20%; Literature review/proposal 20%; Final Paper and workshop design 50%.

Context and Ministry

Numerous historical and social forces shape what we think ministry is and how we practice it. Each of us inherits and embodies these forces to varying degrees of disadvantage and privilege. In this course, using the lenses of "Intentional Community" and "Vocation," students learn to analyze and respond to the multiple social forces at play in diverse ministry contexts, particularly as each relates to their own social location. In addition to providing space for vocational reflection on the self-in-context, this course calls students to responsibility for dismantling the 'cult of normalcy,' and the role that they play in. Our task is integrative. Students explore and nurture connections between their learnings in this class and others, their prior and current ministry, faith and life experiences, all with a view to the topic of their own vocation. Evaluation includes participation in site visits outside of class, small group discussions, reflection paper and integrative papers. Successful completion of this course is required for enrollment in Contextual Education II EMF3020YY.

This course provides an overview and introduction to global issues, power and players at the heart of international development. As an overview to the macro features, challenges and practices of the
humanitarian aid and assistance wor1d, the course helps students build a platform for understanding the field's numerous dimensions and complexity. History, worldviews, approaches and actors are
explored across the international development spectrum, as are the patterns and lenses of several Christian perspectives. Understanding is built around the nature and dynamics of poverty and power, and their relationships to the spectrum of development approaches and practices, along with the roles of international agencies, governments, and civil society players in working with the marginalized and

Community-Based Assessment and Design

Residents of urban at-risk communities often have ministry done to them by well-meaning people. Organizations (non-proftis, churches, government, etc.) swoop in with money, people and resources and tell the community what they need. Playgrounds are erected overnight, murals painted over, or gardens appear without anyone asking the people who live there what they want. The message that no one listens is reinforced in their minds. God's concept of "shalom" is not one of doing to people but one of inviting people to participate in their own community development. Students in this course will develop the skills necessary to engage a local community. This approach is guided through the development tools of community assessment (listening to the community) and project design, monitoring and evaluation (responding with the coomunity to a limitation). At the end of this course students will have the skills necessary to involve the community in its own restoration.

Facilitating Forgiveness and Reconciliation in the Church and in the World

Forgiveness and reconciliation are central to the gospel message and virtues that mark Christian maturity. Recognizing them as virtues does not automatically translate into an ability to recover from relationship hurts, and people may then turn to a clergyperson or lay leader in the church for help in getting from a place of hurt and anger to one of acceptance and closure. This course is designed to assist students in their efforts to acquire the knowledge, wisdom and skills they need, first to embody the virtues themselves and then to facilitate others. Course material will be delivered by means of lectures, movie clips, and popular and scholarly publications. Grades will be based on a set of personal reflection papers (40%), an annotated bibliography (10%) and scholarly essay (40%), and active participation in small group and whole class discussions (10%).

The practice begins in the Book of Acts and has continued through Christian history, but is currently taking fresh and sometimes unconventional forms in Western society. This course lays foundations for church planting and fresh expressions of church in scripture and theology, and then looks at contemporary practice through exposure to current resources and practitioners. We will examine worldviews as a tool for understanding cultures, and look specifically at what the shift from modernity to postmodernity means for the church and its mission. This course focuses on personal contemplative prayer as essential for our relationship with God and the soil out of which healthy and effective ministry grows. The course covers Biblical teaching on prayer; the contemplative tradition arising from the early desert fathers and mothers; spirituality, theology and psychology of prayer; and various Christian traditions of prayer including lectio divina, Ignatian prayer, other forms of scripture prayer, centering prayer, Christian meditation, and the awareness examen.The course concludes with suggestions for planting and growing a prayer-based parish ministry. Lectures, small group and plenary sharing, and practicum. Two reflection papers and a final paper designing a course to be taught in a ministry seeting. This course will require students to advance their singing and ensemble talents in a group rehearsal situation that is based on knowledge and its application, in order to achieve creative goals. The chorus director takes the role of lead interpreter and coach for the team. After cultivating reliable vocal production, diction, and notation reading skills, the choir will study repertoire drawn form twentieth century British and North American composers, using sacred texts. Styles will range from classical to jazz. Those registered for credit will be required to attend all rehearsals, and submit two short research papers, as well as a major book review. Students will be assessed on the faithfulness of attendance and team-interaction; on their growth in the vocal discipline; on three written assignments, and contribution to the summative exercise (final concert). African American preaching varies widely and combines evangelical fervour with social concern. This is not a course in how to preach as an African American, or in imitating the voice, gesture, or style of a culture not one's own; it is designed to stretch preachers beyond what may be familiar to help them to be more bold and imaginative in proclamation of the gospel, and to offer resources to develop their own preaching voice and stye. Participants in the course will investigate and evaluate significant perspectives on the learning process in order to understand the assumptions of various theories and to interpret these from a biblically- informed standpoint. Each student will be responsible for following and reporting on developments in one location represented by a Tanenbaum "Peacemaker-in-Action" throughout the course. Meanwhile, the evolution of the theological/ecclesial/interfaith discussion of peacemaking will be traced through the 20th century debate between pacifism and just war; conflict resolution and transformation; peacekeeping, peacemaking and peacebuilding; humanitarian aid and development; NGOs and the military. Dual Citizenship: Gospel and Culture

This course will examine the fundamental tension in which Christians have always lived and served: through precept, metaphor, and example the Church has been told to be "salt and light" in the world and yet be "unspotted" by it; we are to be ''in" yet not "of" the world; on one hand we are to be "citizens of heaven" and yet the apostle Paul boldly used his Roman citizenship to advantage.

The course will juxtapose the Biblical vision of the Church with western society as currently constituted. Dominant cultural values will be studied along with the diverse ways in which they are embodied and shaped in particular micro-cultures. Finally, the course will apply Biblical principles of mission to the task of engagement with the wider society in all its many forms and explore possible trajectories of praxis to guide Christian leaders in encounter with the "world."

This foundational practicum is designed for persons desiring formation in pastoral presence and communication skills. Focus is placed on the development of a contemplative stance, compassionate listening and evocative presence for pastoral service in roles such as spiritual director, chaplain, parish minister, and for those in service within the context of everyday work life. This transformative process integrates topics of Ignatian discernment, prayer, spiritual growth, spirituality, justice, theological assumptions and images of God. This is a two-term, supervised, peer based practicum. Wesleyan Foundations for Church and Community in Canada

The United Church of Canada is known as a liberal denomination that merged Methodists, Congregationalists and Presbyterians, whose histories are based in Wesleyan and Calvinist thought and practice. The 18th century Methodist tradition from which it derived became a church in community, ministering through schools, hospitals, prisons, economic cooperatives, and other institutions that served disenfranchised people in 18th century England and Ireland. This course explores how Wesleyan thought might be retrieved as a foundation for the current "church and community" priorities of the United Church of Canada: 1) Healthy and Faithful Congregations; 2) Youth and Young Adult Ministries; 3) Right Relations with First Nations; and 4) Intercultural Congregations. This course is designed to expose students to a wide range of preachers who have made a significant contribution to preaching. Developments in preaching over time will be explored particualrly with regard to changing ideas of "biblical text," hermeneutics, rhetoric, sermon forms, language theory, and homiletical "schools," and changes in emphasis on key doctrines, personal versus social, preachig for conversion versus preaching to the saved, the rise of social consciousness and its effects on preaching, and law and gospel. Presentations will include brief biographical material; homiletical setting; short sermon extracts that demonstrate some homiletical/hermeneutical principle, identification of homiletical learnings for today; and portions of sermons written for today that demonstrate a historical principle. This course is primarily designed to improve student preaching through exposure to one of the strongest preaching traditions today. African American preaching varies widely and combines evangelical fervour with social cocern. It will be considered against the backdrop of black history and culture, theology of the Word, hermeneutics, compsoing for oral delivery, and homiletical theory and practice. This is not a course in how to preach as an African American, or in imitating the voice, gesture, or style of a culture not one's own; it is designed to stretch preachers beyond what may be familiar to help them to be more bold and imaginative in proclamation of the gospel, and to offer resources to develop their own preaching voice and style. The course will consist of video and audio clips, lectures, seminar presentations and class sermons. Participants in the course will investigate and evaluate significant perspectives on the learning process in order to understand the assumptions of various theories and to interpret these from a biblically- informed standpoint. They will review current research into child development and learning (e.g. brain research, cognitive processes, multiple intelligences, learning styles ) in seeking to develop a coherent understanding of the relationships between various learning theories, on the basis of a Christian view of the person and of the knowledge. An action research project will enable participants to test an approach to learning that is relevant to their educational responsibilities.
