TST Mourns the loss of Rev. Mathew Thomas (Vinu Achen), who passed away tragically on April 19, 2013. During his studies in Canada, Fr. Mathew was the Vicar of St. Mathew's Mar Thoma Church in Milton and the Vicar of the Mar Thoma Church in Ottawa. He was a doctoral student at the Faculty of Divinity, Trinity College, completing his thesis on the legacy of colonialism in Kerala society. Fr. Matthew Thomas is survived by wife Maya and two children Christine & Edwin. Please remember the bereaved family in your prayers. May he rest in the peace of the risen Lord.

Congratulations to the following 2013 award recipients!

Gordon Farquharson Scholarship, for academic excellence: Lane Scruggs, a Th.D. candidate at Wycliffe College. Lane’s intellect and scholarly capacities are of the highest order and he has proven himself able to work diligently, creatively and effectively in the academic context.

The current Memorandum of Agreement between the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto is approaching its terminal date, and is being reviewed with a view to renewing it for a further term. The current MOA can be found here.

The Toronto School of Theology (TST) and its seven member colleges are pleased to announce that planning is underway to shape the future direction of its programming. Changes will increase excellence in research and in the preparation of learned leaders in religion and society. As the TST consortium enters its 42nd year of operation and approaches the fourth renewal of the agreement governing its relation with the University of Toronto (UofT), plans include mounting a conjoint Doctor of Philosophy in Theology (PhD) with UofT.

Congolese religious leaders, speaking at TST in September, asked Canadians to support more robust UN peacekeeping in their troubled country. An excellent article on their visit appears in this month’s Catholic Register.

The Emma Kaufman Scholarship

This award of approximately $10,000 will be given out occasionally, as funds permit.

Background of the Scholarship

After an afternoon of moving testimony by survivors of Canada’s Indian Residential Schools on June 2 at meetings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Director Alan Hayes offered a blank notebook as an expression of reconciliation on behalf of the Toronto School of Theology and its member colleges.
