Congratulations to Recipients of the 2025 TST Board of Trustees Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries!

Each year scholarships, awards and bursaries are granted through the Toronto School of Theology Board of Trustees. This year’s recipients demonstrated a wide range of academic, research, and personal work in the areas of ecumenism, marginalized communities, and community-based initiatives. Congratulations to all recipients!

Donald Cameron Memorial Award

This award honours the memory of Donald Cameron who served TST in a number of capacities over many years including Chair of the Board of Trustees. Donald had a deep commitment to the wider community beyond the Church, and this award recognizes activities by a student that engage the wider community.

  • Awarded to:  Cari Ferguson, a Master of Pastoral Studies (MPS) student at Knox College.

Gordon M. Farquharson Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2008 by the Board of Trustees in honour of Gordon Farquharson, who assisted in the incorporation of TST in 1965–1970, and also in the incorporation of its predecessor organization. The scholarship is made possible by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation plus matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded to a doctoral student for academic excellence.

  • Awarded to:  Patrick Nolin, a PhD in Theological Studies student at Regis College (Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology).

Margaret E. Fleck Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2006 by the Board of Trustees in honour of the Reverend Margaret E. Fleck, an Anglican priest and divinity graduate of Trinity College, and former member of the TST Board of Trustees. The award is funded by a gift of the Ralph M. Barford Foundation along with matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). The scholarship is awarded for academic excellence and demonstrated capacity to communicate effectively to the broader community.

  • Awarded to:  Samuel Stewart, a PhD in Theological Studies student at St. Michael’s College (Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology).

C. Douglas Jay Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Board of Trustees in 1981 in honour of the Founding Director of TST, Professor C. Douglas Jay. The award is made possible thanks to contributions made over the years by the Douglas and Ruth Jay Family Fund of The United Church of Canada Foundation, and a bequest from Professor Jay’s estate upon his passing in 2021. The award is available to a graduate student with excellent academic standing who is studying in the area of Christian social ethics, philosophical theology, philosophy of religion, or psychology of religion.

  • Awarded to:  Kyle Ferguson, a PhD in Theological Studies student at St. Michael’s College (Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology).

John M. Kelly Award

Established in honour of Father John Kelly, former President of the University of St. Michael’s College and a TST Board of Trustees member, this award is given to a student, who, through his or her service to the TST community, has made a notable contribution to TST's common life.

  • Awarded to:  Maureen Ononiwu, a PhD in Theological Studies student at Wycliffe College.

Order of St. Lazarus Bursary

This bursary was established in 1994 through a gift from the Military and Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus of Jerusalem, recognizes academic excellence and is awarded to a TST graduate student for work in ecumenism. An additional gift, generously made by the Order, has been supplemented by matching funds from the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS).

  • Awarded to:  Stephen Mutavdzija, a PhD in Theological Studies student at Regis College (Regis St. Michael’s Faculty of Theology).

Marjorie Watson Powles Award

This award was established by the Board of Trustees in 2002 in honour of Dr. Marjorie Watson Powles to recognize her contribution to the lives and work of women active in the Church. The award is available to a TST student who actively engages in community and congregational life, demonstrates academic excellence, and brings a feminist perspective to the study of theology.

  • Awarded to:  Shauna Kubossek, a PhD in Theological Studies student at Emmanuel College.

Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) Bursary

Bursary funds from the portion of the TST's endowment fund under the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) program are available to assist PhD and DMin students.

  • Awarded to:  Chia-An (Victor) Tung, a Doctor of Ministry (DMin) student at Emmanuel College.
