This course prepares students for active worship leadership in the contemporary Church. Attention is given to the nature of worship, the role of ritual, movement and voice, music, homiletics (theory and performance), as well as phenomenological and theological reflection on the practice of ministry. The planning and preparation of worship is given attention, and practicums will provide opportunities to acquire liturgical skills.

This is a foundational course in theological exegesis. It explores the implications of reading Scripture as Word of God, as witness to the gospel, and as dramatic 'script' for the church's mission. It poses the fundamental question "what does it mean to read a text?" in particular contexts of interpretation. As a text case, we will spend several weeks engaged in close reading of Paul's letter to the Romans.

Although some attention will be given to what might be called the doctrine of Scripture (including questions of inspiration, canon, hermeneutics, historical-criticism, etc.) the primary focus of the course will be the church’s practice of reading Scripture. The aim of the course is to foster loving engagement with the Bible as the Word of God and Christian Scripture in a way that is faith-full, obedient, unapologetic, ecclesial, Trinitarian, confident and that abides by the church’s norms of the “rule of faith” and “sola scriptura.”
